On 11/15/2021 at 0952hrs, the Company along with Station 24 (Kennett Fire Co) were dispatched to the 700blk of W. Cypress St in Kennett Township for a motor vehicle crash, with a vehicle into the creek and a subject trapped.

E-25-2 and Rescue 24 responded from Station 24 and were advised that a single vehicle had overturned into the creek and the driver was still inside the sinking vehicle.

E-25-2, Rescue 24 and a police officer from the Kennett Square Borough Police Department arrived simultaneously at 0955hrs to find a vehicle in the west branch of the Red Clay Creek. The vehicle had water up to the windows and sinking into a deeper portion of the creek.

Ptlm. Todd broke a window on the vehicle and began to remove the subject while Sgt. Fuller climbed to the top of the vehicle to assist with getting the driver out of the window. The vehicle became submerged during the rescue, Sgt Fuller, Captain Jack Melton and Ptlm. Todd were able to complete the extrication and remove the subject to the shoreline where the remaining 24 and 25 personnel along with Kennett Township Public Works were able to relocate the subject into the care of MICU 1-25-1.

Longwood and Kennett crews deployed hazardous materials booms to contain the leaking fluid downstream. The PA DEP was notified of the small amount of motor vehicle fluids in a public waterway.

Crews then assisted Blittersdorf Towing with removing the vehicle from the creek.

Avondale Ambulance 23-1 was requested to monitor the personnel who entered the freezing water for signs of hypothermia. Fortunately, no personnel required transport for further treatment.

The injured driver was transported to Christiana Trauma Center for treatment.

Fire Police from Kennett, Longwood and Avondale provided traffic control for the duration of the incident.

Chief 25 had the Cypress Street Command.
